Sweet Scanner for EXPERIENCED Users (07 September 2010)
I am a long time scanner user and this is by far the sweetest radio I've ever owned. It's compact, jammed with features, and works beautifully. HOWEVER the instruction manual (which comes on a CD with the radio) is beyond difficult- it's worthless. It is poorly laid out, and even with 20+ years experience in scanners it made little sense to me. The only way to program my radio was by trial and error coupled with experience. If you are a first time or novice scanner user PAY TO HAVE THIS programmed. Better yet buy a Radio Shack scanner- their users manuals are very clearly written and teach you how to use your radio. If you are a veteran scanner user and have experience programming different trunked radios, especially Uniden Bearcat models, and don't mind a few hours of trial and error, this is the sweetest analog trunking scanner on the market.

Do not buy (03 September 2010)
I have to give it a do not buy. I have had a couple of the BC246T's for years. I don't know who at Uniden thought it was a good idea to do away with the manual but they should be fired. If I had not already known how to program a 246T I doubt I would have ever been able to get this going. When I did the reception on the 800 Police is no better so no advantage. It does now allow priority scan in trunking mode which is nice.
The next problem in the Attenuator. On the 246 it is simple to turn on and off. On this one it is a major deal. I use it all the time. When I am close to some cell towers it makes it work better. This is what was a deal breaker for me. I was trying to turn it on and I did something that set the search on. I could not get it back off. I started trying to find it on the web but finally just said to hell with it. This thing will be fine if you always have access to the net. If you are using it someplace where you don't have net access and you have a problem your are just out of luck. Uniden could have at least made it so there was a manual in PDF form. I don't know what they figure this move saved them but I am sending this back for credit and will not buy another Uniden if my 246 wears out.

  Uniden Scanner (22 August 2010)
Love the scanner. Good sound quality and great features. Not going to be able to use right out of the box, and programming the scanner is intimidating at first. I was fortunate enough to have a dispatcher on the local police force program my local police department frequencies. After using for a few weeks and reading more online instructions, was able to program local airport and additional public safety frequencies with ease. Overall, great purchase.

  I really like it!!! (15 August 2010)
Well I have to agree with most other reviewers. I wish this thing had better instructions. I have been a scanner user since the 80's and I see they have come along way since my last scanner.
I am glad there are programs to help program this scanner. Not sure I could figure out how to do it without a lot of homework. Which I plan to do when I have a little more time. And that is part of the fun of it. I am sure I will really love this thing once I figure it all out.
And do get the recommended adaptor for using it with your computer. Otherwise programing will really be a handful.
